Infrared Thermography for the Evaluation of Inflammatory and Degenerative Joint Diseases: A Systematic Review

There has become an increasing interest in using thermography for screening and monitoring joint diseases over the past several decades.

This systematic review evaluates the use of infrared thermography in diagnosing and monitoring osteoarthritis and rheumatic diseases. By analyzing 32 eligible studies from 1990 to May 2021, involving 2094 patients, it found a growing interest in this technology. Infrared thermography correlates well with disease presence, stage, and treatment response, proving to be a simple, accurate, noninvasive, and radiation-free method. This technology can complement existing tools for screening, diagnosis, and monitoring of these joint diseases.
